Why Coherence Is the Missing Dimension in Human-Centric Design
(and what biology is trying to tell architecture)
.
TL:DR
Human-centric design gave us lighting tuned to our circadian clocks but it stopped short.
Light isn’t just visual, it’s biological information.
True health emerges when architecture synchronises with biology at every level: circadian, mitochondrial, electromagnetic and emotional.
That state is called biological coherence and it’s the future of longevity architecture.
1. The State of the Field
Human-centric design has evolved from a buzzword into measurable science.
Recent studies in Applied Sciences and Buildings (2024) show that circadian-aligned lighting can improve sleep, cognition and mood.
Hosseini et al. reviewed 26 studies in hospitals; dynamic lighting reduced delirium, improved recovery and boosted staff alertness.
Jalali et al. proposed a four-pillar framework for circadian lighting: timing, spectral quality, duration and spatial distribution.
The conclusion is clear: light is not decoration, it is physiology.
And yet, if light alone were enough, we’d already be thriving inside every WELL-certified building.
We aren’t. Something is still missing.
2. The Blind Spot: We Engineered the Signal, Not the System
Light has been treated as an input, a dose of blue or a dose of amber, but biology doesn’t work in isolation.
It works through networks of resonance.
Circadian cues only land when the receiving system — the mitochondria, the nervous system and the connective matrix — is coherent enough to respond.
Without coherence, even the best-tuned light becomes noise.
The circadian clock keeps time.
The mitochondria play the music.
The nervous system listens, adjusts and amplifies.
The environment is the hall that gives the sound its shape.
Coherence is when all four — rhythm, energy, awareness and space — move as one.
🔬 3. Evidence Emerging Beyond Light
a. Infrared and the Mitochondrial Story
Research by Hamblin (2023) shows that red and near-infrared light (600–900 nm) activates cytochrome c oxidase and enhances ATP production while reducing oxidative stress.
Yet most modern glazing blocks up to 99% of these wavelengths (Zhao 2022, Building & Environment).
We’ve optimised the alerting part of sunlight and filtered out the regenerative half.
b. Electromagnetic Coherence
Havas 2021 demonstrated that chronic EMF exposure alters HRV, melatonin and oxidative stress markers.
Ironically, smart lighting and automated systems increase EMF load in the very spaces meant for rest.
c. Neuro-Spatial Safety
Porges 2022 reminds us that physiological regulation begins with perceived safety.
Geometry, acoustics and sensory tone matter as much as spectrum.
Without neuro-spatial safety, circadian rhythm alone cannot restore coherence.
🔁 4. The Missing Concept: Biological Coherence
Coherence isn’t poetic, it’s measurable.
In physics it’s the synchrony of waves; in biology it’s when the rhythms of heart, brain, mitochondria and environment entrain.
When coherence is high:
HRV increases (resilience)
Redox balance stabilises (less inflammation)
The body feels safe enough to heal
These are the foundations of longevity, not just lifespan but joy-span.
🏛 5. Designing for Coherence
Current Paradigm Emerging Paradigm
|-------------------------------––-|----------------------------------------------------
| Circadian-aligned lighting | Spectral, electromagnetic and spatial resonance
| “Human-centric” buildings | Biologically coherent environments
| Metrics: lux, m-EDI | Metrics: HRV, redox, subjective safety
| Tech automation | Nature-informed calibration
In practice:
Use glazing that preserves infrared wavelengths for mitochondrial repair.
Minimise EMF exposure.
Align room orientation with solar trajectory.
Use geometry and acoustic patterning that echo the rhythm of the heartbeat (~1 Hz) to enhance vagal tone.
6. The Next Step
The literature already validates the parts:
Circadian light regulates melatonin.
Infrared light supports mitochondrial repair.
HRV tracks nervous-system coherence.
What no one has yet done is integrate these strands into a unified architectural science.
That is what the Biological Coherence of Architecture™ framework does, connecting photons, frequencies and forms to measurable health outcomes.
Human-centric design brought us comfort.
Biological coherence will bring us vitality.
Because light alone can set the clock,
but only coherence can make the body sing.

We perfected precision —
and lost coherence as chance and orientation.
We optimized tactical intelligence —
and abandoned meaning.
Sapiopoiesis begins where control ends.
It is not about producing more information,
but about cultivating orientation.
Not the pursuit of novelty,
but the renewal of meaning.
It is the minimal architecture
that allows subject autonomy to remain viable under uncertainty —
the ability to stay real
when knowledge fragments faster than it can integrate.
That is why I founded the Epistemic Core —
for those who sense
that the next transformation will not be technological,
but epistemic.
You’ll find Epistemic Keys — formulations that unlock coherence —
and aphoristic GPTs — generative instruments
that explore how thought reorganizes itself beyond language’s redundancy.
It’s orientation —
a living field where meaning learns to think.
To stand with the Core
is to stand at the frontier
where civilization either collapses into redundancy —
or reawakens into coherence.
